H.U. Lee Memorial Scholarship

Eternal Grand Master H.U. Lee, a pioneer in the world of martial arts and a tireless advocate for humanitarian causes, left an indelible mark on the martial arts community and beyond. His dedication to fostering positive change and supporting charitable organizations inspired not only his students but also those who came into contact with his incredible journey. As a tribute to his legacy, the H.U. Lee Memorial Scholarship Foundation was established to carry forward his commitment to education and personal development through the avenue of martial arts.

The purpose of the H.U. Lee Memorial Scholarship Foundation is to provide financial support and opportunities for education to practitioners of Songahm Taekwondo seeking to pursue a university education. The foundation's primary objective is to honor Grand Master Lee's legacy by enabling aspiring students to achieve their academic dreams while upholding the values and philosophy instilled by Songahm Taekwondo.

The H.U. Lee Memorial Scholarship Foundation stands as a living tribute to the extraordinary life and achievements of Eternal Grand Master H.U. Lee. Through its support of the academic aspirations of martial artists, the foundation ensures that his legacy of perseverance, dedication, and self-improvement lives on in the generations to come. As recipients of the scholarship contribute positively to their communities and society at large, they embody the essence of Grand Master Lee's motto: "Today Not Possible, Tomorrow Possible."

Previous Recipients

In 2013, the H.U. Lee Memorial Scholarship Foundation awarded Mr. Cody Obropta a scholarship of $3,279 to assist with his pursuit of a Bachelor of Science in Civil/Environmental Engineering at Rutgers University.

Mr. Obropta graduated from Rutgers University in 2017 and went on to become a licensed professional civil engineer in 2022. He now works as a Stormwater Engineer for the Maine Department of Environmental Protection.

When asked about the impact of the scholarship, Mr. Obropta remarked, "I'm incredibly thankful for the generous scholarship given to me by the H.U. Lee Memorial Scholarship Foundation. I'm grateful that ATA is able to provide its own scholarships for martial artists seeking to continue their education. I think my martial arts experience equipped me with the discipline, focus, and perseverance required to pursue my undergraduate degree and achieve success in my chosen career."

Scholarship Details

There are two types of scholarships: national and regional. Each region of the ATA raises funds for the scholarship foundation. Regions keep 75% of the monies raised (to be awarded to regional applicants as decided by the region's review committee), with 25% of the money helping fund national scholarships. Applicants meeting the requirements can apply for both regional and national scholarships (though national recipients will become ineligible to receive an additional regional scholarship).

Region 110B (our region) spans from Connecticut to Maine. There are currently six schools in our region (three in MA, two in NH, and one in ME).
